Building Communities. Empowering Lives.

About NNDC

Over 55 years of community development, education, and empowerment in Chicago’s Near North Side

Our Mission

Near North Development Corporation empowers individuals and families through comprehensive community development, educational programs, and affordable housing initiatives that build pathways to economic stability and social mobility.

Our Vision

A thriving Near North Side community where every resident has access to quality education, stable housing, and economic opportunities that enable them to reach their full potential.

Our History

From humble beginnings to a cornerstone of community development

1967

Our Foundation & Early Years

Founded in 1967, NNDC was established by longtime residents of Chicago’s Near North Side community to address the deterioration of affordable housing and improve quality of life for low-income and minority residents.

1980s

Housing Innovation

Affordable Housing Milestones
From 1978 – 1991, NNDC assisted in the development of more than 369 affordable housing units, including:

  • 84 units at Evergreen & Sedgwick (1978)

  • 100 units for seniors at Evergreen Towers (1981)

  • 84 units at Evergreen Terrace (1983)

  • 101 units at Evergreen Towers II (1991)

1990s

Community Development Efforts

From 1991 – 2004, NNDC broadened its focus beyond housing to address crime prevention, local school improvements, neighborhood commercial and industrial revitalization, and affordable recreational programs through the Park District.

Today

Committed to Housing, Education & Community

NNDC continues its mission to maintain North Town as an economically, socially, and racially integrated community. In addition to our housing initiatives, we operate the TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) program, a federally funded college access initiative serving 513 students across three school districts.

Through one-on-one college advising, mentoring, financial aid support, college prep workshops, and campus visits, TRIO ETS helps first-generation, low-income high school students pursue, succeed, and graduate in higher education.
